Anna's Angel Update: May 2008
Our last update was so long ago, it’s hard to know where to even begin. We have so much to tell you! But first, please forgive us for not updating sooner. Things have been changing so much for Anna and her Angel Fund that we have hardly had time to breathe between her doctor visits, her school work, and all the additional Angel Fund work she has been given. It’s actually frustrating that when we need you most we seem to have less time to tell you so! But with all that being said, here are some of the amazing things that have been happening since November! First, and probably most exciting of all, Anna’s Angel Fund has been blessed in a way we never expected. She is now receiving requests from Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama and has expanded her Angel Fund to include the pediatric cancer patients there as well! The social workers there have overwhelmed us with their requests and their gratitude, and it has been so humbling to hear how much your gifts have meant to the children being treated in Alabama. Yet another wonderful and precious surprise that gives Anna joy beyond words! We’ll be traveling to Birmingham in a couple of weeks to meet these social workers in person for the first time.
In addition, Anna is also now being contacted by more social workers than ever in the Atlanta area on behalf of pediatric cancer patients. We recently met several new social workers at another hospital who have begun sending us requests. And, now that Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has taken over Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital, we are working with them as well. It is overwhelming to say the least.
We are now receiving requests on behalf of so many more children and families, but we know that this is what Anna has been called to do, and that she will continue to be able to meet their needs. It has been amazing to watch God work in the past and we are excited about what He continues to do in Anna’s life, and through her life, because of our angels.
Christmas this year was again just awesome! There’s no better word to express it. We were so blessed to be able to hand out gifts to each and every child who had to spend Christmas Day in the hospital at Egleston, with the exception of the intensive care units. And even for some of those children, we were able to leave gifts to be handed out to them. It was especially meaningful to many of the kids because Tim and Kim Hudson took several hours away from their own three precious children on Christmas Day to meet us at the hospital, and go to each patient’s room. (For those of you who aren’t from Atlanta, Tim is one of our ace Atlanta Braves pitchers and Kim is his amazing wife! They are huge supporters of the AFLAC Cancer Center.) I can’t tell you how much it meant to many of those kids and their families to know that Tim and Kim would take time on Christmas Day to come to the hospital to see them. Tim signed autographs on all kinds of things for them! The most memorable visit was with one teenage boy in particular. Both he and his family were so visibly moved and thrilled that Tim was there. Not long after Christmas this boy passed away, making this visit an even more special gift to him, and the memory of it invaluable to his family.
Our Christmas Day visits worked out just perfectly again this year, in that we were able to find out the ages, sex, and wishes of the kids who were in the hospital on Christmas Day, too. How cool to walk into those rooms and hand them just exactly what they dreamed of getting for Christmas - but Santa just couldn’t deliver. There’s nothing like the feeling of knowing that Santa couldn’t deliver, but that our angels could – and once a year, getting to see their reactions and the joy on their faces! (At Christmas we give Anna a break from our anonymity rule and it is such a special gift to all of us!)
The day was filled with so many smiles, but a few tears as well. Anna, Kim and I all cried as we took turns holding and rocking a little three year old boy for what we knew would be the last time. His little body, so ravaged by his brain tumor and so swollen from steroids, made him almost unrecognizable to us. But most of the rooms were filled with happy faces and excitement over the surprises our angels had provided just for them.
When we walk into these kids’ rooms, they cannot hide the pain and the fear we see in their faces. It is fear of the unknown - and the known. But we are so grateful to you for the moments of joy that only our angels can bring. How precious it is to us and to them.
Since our last update, here are just a few of the ways Anna has used your gifts to bring those moments of joy. We’ve chosen to relate fewer of them this time, because we had so much other news this time, too! But we have many more stories to share with anyone who would like to hear them!
$196.13 Toys R Us, $965.26 Target
16 month old little girl diagnosed with an optic glioma and NF. She has a five year old sister and two very hard working parents. Mom works at McDonald’s and Dad has a very low paying job at a hospital. Their social worker described them to us as very poor and badly in need of a “pick me up”. Anna asked that they make a wish list because we knew their needs were great, especially for clothing. They hesitantly did so and it made it much more rewarding to buy for them. Anna was able to purchase exactly what they needed and wanted most! In addition to the clothing, she was able to buy sheets and blankets, a walker, several educational and musical toys, and riding toys for the girls.
$681.01 Alabama Power
Family whose teenage boy is fighting lymphoma and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments. To complicate matters for this family, his mother is also fighting a very tough battle with cancer and is confined to a wheelchair. This leaves the poor husband/father in a very stressful and impossible position. He is extremely committed to doing what is best for them and wants so badly to work and support his family. But they constantly need him to help care for them, and take them to treatments and appointments. The stress on this family is unimaginable. Dad isn’t working much because he just can’t manage it all. The only help their social worker asked for on their behalf was for payment of their power bill, including reconnection fees. She said the teenage boy was being discharged from the hospital soon and would be allowed to come in as an outpatient for his chemo treatments for a while. But their power had been turned off and they could not go home without it. Anna’s response was, “Of course we’ll help them, Mom. That one is a ’no-brainer’.” And so we did.
$716 Paden Realty Co., $229.92 Alabama Gas Corp., $69.51 Best Buy, $138.97 Wal-Mart, $252.08 Target, $27.76 UPS store
16 yr. old girl being treated for Rhabdomyosarcoma. She has two sisters (ages 14 and 6) and a brother (10 yrs. old). The family’s social worker was having trouble finding enough assistance for this family and was thrilled that Anna would be able to help relieve the stress on them. Anna paid two month’s rent for this family, and paid their gas bill as well. And, as always, it’s a lot more fun if you can send something to make the children happy, so we sent a few movies for the 16 yr. old patient, and PlayStation Portables with a few games for all the kids. The box arrived in Birmingham filled with gifts that were wrapped in the love of our angels and covered with Easter candy, too!
$18.32 Party City, $57.45 Target
Staff at the hospital was planning a Valentine’s Day party for a developmentally delayed 14 yr. old boy who had been in the hospital for five months. He’d had many long term admissions in the past, but this was the longest and he’d suffered many complications with his disease. He was a huge fan of celebrations – celebrations of any kind. We didn’t realize it at the time, but this was a celebration of his life. He was truly going “home”. We found out shortly after his party that he had passed away and we surely were grateful for the decisions we’d made to ensure that his party was everything we thought he would have wanted it to be. Anna provided lots of Valentine’s Day candy and Little Debbie cakes for him, all the nurses, doctors and staff to share. She also provided all the paper goods for the party and tons of decorations for his room and for the hallway. At the last minute, we also bought plenty of balloons to make sure everything looked especially festive. Surely it must have been a happy scene!
$400 Alabaster Water Co., $1200 Alabama Power, $1800 Landlord’s bank account for rent, $100 gas card, $75 restaurant gift card
4 yr. old little boy diagnosed with ALL (Leukemia). Was being treated in a city in south Alabama and something went terribly wrong. He was in a coma and when he woke up he was severely impaired neurologically. He cannot walk or talk now and has to use a communication board and wheelchair. His parents both quit their jobs and moved their three children to Birmingham to find better care for their very sick (and now terribly disabled) little boy. Both parents are very educated but mom is now staying at home to take care of her son. Dad had to take a very low paying job at the hospital for now and they are having a tough time making ends meet. Rarely do we see a family who has gone from being such a “typical” pediatric cancer family, to being one that is in the most desperate circumstances. But this is surely one of those. They needed much, but Anna had much to give at the time. God bless our angels for rescuing this family.
$226 Six Flags (Five 1-Day General Admission Tickets), $200 Cash for meals, parking, souvenirs for five people
16 yr. old brain tumor patient who just finished his chemo treatments and was having a birthday. All he wished for was to go to Six Flags. His family was very low income and the additional financial strain brought on by his illness dashed any hopes of his family being able to afford to take him. So his social worker asked if Anna might be able to help. You bet! Our angels gave him and his family lots of free rides! Anna was also able to provide cash for parking, meals and even souvenirs at the park that day.
$300 Kroger gift card, $581.13 Target, $270.87 J.C. Penney, $56.34 Bed, Bath and Beyond
12 yr. old girl with bone cancer, living with her mother. (Dad is totally uninvolved in her life.) Mom works in a warehouse and has missed a lot of work because of the intensity and length of her daughter’s treatments. She had 12 weeks of very intensive chemotherapy and then surgery to remove the tumor (in her leg). Once that healed, she was to receive seven more months of chemo. When we heard about them, she had recently had the surgery to remove the tumor and their situation was so very sad. In her case, the doctors did not have to amputate her leg, but did a “limb spare” instead, replacing the diseased part of the bone with prosthetic bone. She is unable to walk on it and will always need crutches. Their social worker called and asked if Anna might be able to step in very quickly and help them with some basic needs. The next day, before we had a chance to do anything at all, this same social worker called to tell us that this mother and daughter had been in a terrible car accident and the 12 yr. old had hit the windshield with her face. Now she was bald, had a terribly lacerated face, two broken shoulders, was in terrible pain, and in a wheelchair. Her reasons to hide in the self-consciousness that had already plagued her and kept her from wanting to go to school had just been multiplied exponentially.
We couldn’t wait to unload “angel gifts” on these two! We got lots of suggestions from their social worker and hit the stores that day! Both mom and the 12 yr. old got an Ipod Nano, ITunes gift cards, sheets, blankets and pillows, plenty of new clothes, and winter coats that fit. Anna also chose movies, a new book bag, games, books, and a portable DVD player for the 12 yr. old. Mom also got a Kroger gift card and seemed pretty thrilled with that, too.
$31.94 ShopRachelRay.com, $62.73 Amazon.com, $174.94 Target
This was for an 11 year old girl who was fighting a brain tumor and who had been in the hospital for many months straight. She had a birthday coming up and her social worker commented to us that, not only did this little girl not have any clothes that fit her, she was concerned that her family would be not be able to buy her anything for her birthday. We learned that she is a huge fan of Rachel Ray and we found two kids cookbooks on Rachel Ray’s website that were just perfect for her age! We also found her a “Delish!” t-shirt (one of Rachel Ray’s favorite sayings). This little girl’s birthday package also included 5 new comfy outfits that she could wear around the hospital and two new pairs of pajamas. Thanks to you, this little girl who expected nothing for her birthday, had a wonderful time cooking up something special in the family kitchen at the hospital!
$2070 (Three months rent to landlord-not named for privacy), Target ($201.23 Clothing, $269.96 Playstation Portable and games)
17 yr. old boy who is being cared for by his sister. His father lives four hours away and has to have full time care himself. Although his mother does not have custody of him, she had been stealing the 17 yr. olds’ SSI checks and his social worker was trying to help him resolve that issue. In the meantime however, his sister was supporting him and her own children on a very meager salary. His medical bills, in addition to her normal household expenses, had made it very difficult for her to make ends meet. Because of this, his social worker was requesting help from Anna with their rent and with very basic needs for the boy, including things like deodorant, socks, underwear and pajamas. Anna couldn’t resist sending something extra special beyond just what he needed though! He must have thought it was pretty cool when he opened the bag that had a PlayStation Portable and games in it! We love to sit in the car and imagine the reactions after we deliver those kinds of gifts…
$2900 Lavender’s Funeral Home
So very painful for our family, but how grateful we were to you that we could do something for this family. Such a special family to us and they lost their precious little girl to a brain tumor. She was just the sweetest little thing. This little girl’s energy and smile were contagious and we will miss her so very much.
I sincerely believe that seeing families go through times when they lose their hope doesn’t make them faithless. It just makes them human. After all, watching your child suffer is one of the most unbearable kinds of grief I have ever experienced. But the Angel Fund gives us a chance to help restore that hope, sometimes when it seems to be lost forever.
Thank you again for the sanctuary – the moments in time when you give these children a reason to forget their fear. And for the times you offer their families a sense of calm in the midst of their financial crises, and allow them to just focus on their child. What a truly simple but pure and awesome gift. They have no idea who the gift is from so they need not use any emotional energy to even say thank you. They only have to soak in the moment and the peace that it brings.
We pray they will all know their gifts have come because there is a God who loves them beyond words, who cares that they are hurting, who cries with them, counts their tears, and wants to remind them of that by sending angels with gifts of love. You are our amazing angels of love. We treasure you, your generosity, what it means to these children, and to Anna. Thank you so much.
We wish you and your families have a safe and happy summer!
Forever grateful,
Lisa, Larry and Anna

On a personal note:
Anna will be having fairly major surgery herself on June 5th and her recovery will be long – 6-8 weeks. She has severe scoliosis, caused by her radiation treatments and she will be having surgery to correct it. But she is determined to continue her Angel Fund work. She says we can still write checks to pay bills and that she can shop for the children via the internet! So the work will continue through the summer, but we would appreciate your prayers for her as she goes through her surgery and recovery. Thank you!
